The Department of Physics is one of the oldest and most prestigious science departments of the College. Established in 1965 under the eminent leadership of Prof. K. A. Narayanan Namboothirippad, the Department has played a significant role in promoting quality education and scientific learning over the years.
The B.Sc. Physics Degree Programme was introduced in 1998. At present, the Department offers the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in B.Sc. Physics Honours, in accordance with the new undergraduate education framework. The programme provides students with opportunities to pursue Major and Minor disciplines, along with multiple entry and exit options, enabling greater flexibility and interdisciplinary learning.
The Department currently has five faculty members and two technical staff members who are committed to providing quality teaching, practical training, research exposure, and academic support to students. The Department aims to foster a scientific outlook, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a strong foundation in Physics, while promoting the overall personality development of students.
The Department has been recognized under the DBT-Star College Scheme, which has significantly strengthened its academic and laboratory facilities and enhanced opportunities for practical learning and scientific exploration. The Department is equipped with modern facilities, including a 3D printing facility, telescope, and Materials Science Research Facility, providing students with hands-on exposure to emerging areas of science and technology.
The Department has well-equipped laboratories and facilities that support experimental learning, project-based activities, innovation, and research. Students are encouraged to participate in scientific exhibitions, workshops, seminars, internships, innovation initiatives, and research-oriented programmes, thereby connecting classroom learning with real-world applications.
The Department also gives special emphasis to energy conservation, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Students are encouraged to understand the principles of energy conservation and explore scientific and technological solutions for the efficient and responsible use of energy.
Through its academic programmes, research initiatives, modern infrastructure, innovation activities, and outreach programmes, the Department strives to create a vibrant and student-centred learning environment. It aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and scientific attitude required for higher education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and diverse career opportunities.
