Department of History

About: History as a subject started offering with the inception of the College in 1965, as PUC Course. It offered as a subsidiary of BA Economics in 1970 and started BA History Programme in 2001. Set up a Heritage Museum in 2012. Also, established Centre for Dalit and Tribal Studies (CDTS) with UGC Autonomous Grant in 2018. Seminars and workshops of national importance, extracurricular and other extension activities, field visits and experiential learning programmes are the attractions of the department. The Dept. has a team of faculty members whose sincere and devoted efforts constantly encourage moulding the personality of the students and the overall development of the department. Kaadakam- National Tribal Seminar is a flagship programme of the department conducted every year since 2020, under the CDTS. The department has a demand ratio of 2600 in the admission year of 2022-23.

Mission:To prepare students for avenues of career by teaching a core set of transferable skills through the study of societies, cultures, and economies across a broad chronological and geographical spectrum

Objectives

  • • To create a passion for learning about the past; enable them to gain a better understanding of the contemporary world and to make connection to the future.
  • • To familiarize the social, economic, political and cultural developments in India from prehistory up to the present
  • • To develop an understanding on the social, economic, political and cultural developments of Kerala from past to the present
  • • To develop in students vital skills such as critical thinking, analysis, verbal expression, and effective writing
  • • To prepare students for writing the local history projects with focus on tribal, Ethnographic, gender and other topics of local importance
