Objectives of the Practice

The TREE aims at sensitizing students about the pressing need for environmental protection. The present rate of exploitation of natural resources is so alarming that it requires proactive interference on part of enlightened people including students, faculty, the management and the public. The campus with its resources – intellectual and workforce can develop scientific and effective management strategies which will help us find a solution for the present environmental maladies. The practice aim to teach the stakeholders one of the fundamental duties listed in the constitution. Article 51 A (G) states that “it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have for living creatures”

The Practice

The best practice is implemented on the campus among students, faculties, and the immediate neighborhood of the college. Since students are the agents of social change, they are taught the importance of eco system, of natural resources, biodiversity, environment pollution and about the necessity of waste management. The college has a beautiful lush green campus, far from the din and crowd of towns As a part of TREE practice, we are observing public transport day once in every month. On that day all the teaching staffs, non teaching staffs and students are keeping off their private vehicles and using public transport and becoming a part to reduce environmental pollution..

One day campaign on awareness program on dengue fever

Epidemic of Dengue fever had already spread all over Kerala and many lives have been succumbed. DGM MES Mampad college Naval NCC unit along with Primary Health centre Mampad ,gram panchayat Mampad done cleanliness drive and awareness program on 4/7/2017 . Panchayat president inaugurated the program. Cadets and NREGP members Along with health officials cleaned the panchayat surroundings and made the awareness in the public.

Special School cleaning:

The Department of History has visited Bethaniya Ashram and Special School on 06.10.17. All the students of I year, II year and III Year are participated in it. Students are performed cultural Programmes and distributed sweets. Students are Cleaned the surroundings of Bethaniya.

Campaign on invasive Species - free Campus

Department of Zoology and Bhoomitrasena Club of MES Mampad College conducted a seminar on ‘Biological Invasions’ under the broad spectrum of ‘TREE’, a green initiative of the College 11/7/2017. Principal Dr.P.K. Babu chaired the session and Dr.T.V. Sajeev, Executive Director & Scientist E1, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Co-ordinator- Asia Pacific Forest Invasive Species Network, delivered the key note speech with an interactive session. Dr. C.K. Abdul Rabbi Nistar (HOD,Zoology), Prof. O.P. Abdurahiman (Secretary MES Mampad College) Dr. K.S. Anoop Das and Dr.Myna Umaiban delivered speech in connection with the program. Dr.T.V. Sajeev, awarded prizes for best questions in the session. After the session the students and staff were taken to the campus for the detection of invasive plants.

Naval NCC cadets of D.G.M.M.E.S Mampad College celebrated NCC day on 26/11/2017. All the activities were done under the leadership of ANO Lt. Cdr. Dr. C.K Abdul Rabbi Nistar and CC in charge POC Linshida Mundodan. NCC flag was hoisted by ANO followed by his NCC day message. Later, Run for Fun with a message of WASTE MANAGEMENT and cleaning campaign along with broadening of dispensary road was done in MAMPAD Medical dispensary. Total 37 cadets actively participated in the activity.

Sapling and cloth bag distribution

As a part of one student one TREE programme, around 600 fruit saplings along with cloth bags were distributed to the first year degree students on the first day of their induction programme on 17/06/2019. College uniforms were distributed in eco friendly shopping bags.

Report on One day clean-up drive at Kuttanadu

As a part of swachh mission a team from MES Mampad college, consisting of 4 teaching faculties , 31 NCC and NSS members, 3 doctors and 2 engineers have taken part in this massive clean-up drive on 30 August 2018. The team selected Holy Family UP School, Kainakary on the bank of Pamba River. The team engaged in removing mud, washing floors, cleaning the chairs and benches in all class rooms. MES state committee offered food, water and medical assistance for volunteers, Cleaning materials and boat services. Four teaching faculties, Sri. Anas.E, Sri.Hamzathali.AP, Sri.Lt Shameer Babu EK, Dr.Anas Babu led the team.

Pre monsoon awareness and cleaning drive

MES Mampad College NSS units conducted a pre monsoon awareness program for public in adopted village and cleaning drive in adopted village and college compound on 26/5/2018. Junior health inspector Sri.Prabhakaran inaguarated and leaded the awareness class with junior health inspector Smt.Shiji.

Charity works at flood affected areas

NSS Volunteers collected relief materials like dresses, groceries, first aid medicines and essential household materials from and distributed to the inmates in relief camps in Karikkatumanna, Veetikunnu, Adakkakundu and Eranjimangadu. 50 volunteers took part on the cleaning drive of the flood ravaged houses at Nambooripoti and Chakkalakuth from 11/8/2018 to13/8/2018. Distributed food kits containing rice and grocery items to the flood victims. Decided to conduct a cleaning drive with the  participation of 200 NSS Volunteers. Distributed special relief kits containing rice, grocery items and vegetables among the colonies Peringapara(Kalikavu), Pedanthayilpottiyil(Chokkad), Nellikkad

  1. NSS volunteers conducted a cleaning drive at Namboorippotti flood affected river area related with Gandhi Jayanthi on 2 nd October 2018
  2. As a part of Seven day special camp NSS volunteers of the college cleaned flood affected River on 24/12/2018.

Swatch bharath works

By the instruction of Malappuaram suchitwa mission, NSS volunteers of the college made wall painting on GLPS Panthalingal giving the message of environmental protection.

As part of Swatch Bharath Abhiyan, the officials of Nilambur railway station initiated a cleaning program in its premises on October 2 nd, 2018. 73 cadets volunteered in the mission. The Swatch Bharath mission was also observed in the college surroundings.

Butterfly garden

BMC members started a butterfly garden were prepared. 18 th November 2018 butterflies were started to visit the garden. It last for about three months. In the garden we planted a number of host plants like Crotelaria, Nerium, Curryleaf, Clerodendron, Cosmose, Hibiscus, Ixora etc. Blue tiger, stripped tiger, Common crow, Blue mormon, Common rose, Evening brown, Common mime etc were the frequent visitors in the garden. Students get an opportunity to identify different butterfly species and its host plants.

Jackfruit plantation drive

NSS units of the college planted 75 Jack fruit plants inside and outside MES Mampad College compound on 14 th July 2018.

Herbal Garden

To spread awareness about the medicinal value of local herbs and to promote cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants, TREE volunteers made a herbal garden containing around 60 herbs. Plants were collected from Kottakkal Aryavaidyasala and different places in Malappuram. Garden contains various herbs such as brahmi, thippali, cheroola, adalodakam, muyal chevi etc.

Installation of Pen bin on 28/11/2019

The profligate use of disposable ballpoint pens in schools and colleges contributes to the mounting pile of plastic garbage. So under TREE volunteers installed a wooden pen bin for collecting the discarded pen from the campus .Principal Dr P K Babu inaugurated the function.

Paper Pen making

To satisfy the objectives of TREE, we strictly follow green protocol during MESMAC International Conference of the year. Following steps were taken:

    1. Avoided plastic banners, only eco friendly cloth banners in all venues.
    2. With the help of NSS and TREE volunteers, almost 600paper pen were made for the conference. 100 volunteers actively participated in making paper pens.
    3. Avoided the use of plastic cups and plates. Glass or steel wares were used.
    4. Proper waste management system was introduced.

Nature Photography work shop

Department of mass communication in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Avalachi Forest Division organized one day wild life and nature photography workshop for college students on 4 th March 2019.

Water for birds in summer

During summer season we need to realise that the birds in the sky and the bees that pollinate fruits and vegetables for us to live through each day with adequate food are perishing and in despair, having no or minimal sources of water. Under college students union water are provided in shallow earthen bowl at different parts of the campus for the birds to quench their thirst and bath in the water

Paper pen making

NSS Volunteers made more than 1000 paper pens for MESMAC International conference.

Donated steel glasses and plates

NSS units of the college donated 200 steel glasses will give on rent to organize all programmes of the college. By which plastics as well as paper glass leaves the paper purge pollution.

Cloth bag making and distribution

As a part of TREE programme to promote eco- friendly life, NSS units of the college distributed cloth bag at adopted village Rajeev Colony.

2021 Environmental day celebration

In connection with Environmental day celebrations 2021,online poetry competition and digital illustration competition were conducted by TREE. Around 20 students participated in the competition. Limiya Ayisha of B3 Chemistry won first prize for Digital illustration competition and Redna Tarayil of B3 Economics won first prize for Poetry writing competition. Cash prizes were distributed for the winners.

2022 LED Bulb distribution in Tribal colonies

As a part of energy conservation awareness programmes , TREE, NSS and Department of Physics of the college jointly organized LED bulb distribution in Maadam, Veetikunnu and Oli tribal colonies on 31/1/22. Bulbs were made by students of Department of Physics. As a first stage, bulbs were given for almost 50 families. Mampad Panchayat President Sri. Sreenivasan inaugurated the programme by handing over the bulb to ooru muthappan. Principal Dr. Manzur Ali P P, IQAC coordinator Dr. Sabique M K, Tree Coordinators, NSS coordinators, Sky coordinator, Forest range officers and NSS volunteers became a part of the programme.
